Meribel Snow Report: 17th December 2014

Free skiing in Meribel and the conditions are pretty good

Since my ski races in Val Thorens last week I have been doing some training and free skiing in Meribel. On Saturday I had the day off but I decided that it was time to check out the snow in Meribel so I headed up for a few hours of free skiing.

I drove up to Mottaret and although there isn’t as much snow as usual it still had a lovely Christmassy and wintery feel to it and the slopes weren’t too busy which was great!

I decided to head up Pas Du Lac which goes to the top of the Saulire. I went all the way to the top and was surprised by the brilliant view of some very snowy mountains. The piste leading back down to the mid-station of Pas Du Lac was slightly narrower than usual due to the fact that they have concentrated most of the snow on a smaller area to give better coverage.

Most of the snow was artificial which meant that it was really grippy and made a very enjoyable ski. I spun round on the top run quite a few times and it really was a great. There were very few rocks around and I was impressed with the conditions. Looking over to Mont Vallon and Col de la Loze the runs looked in excellent condition and they are saving them for this weekend for when the Christmas crowds arrive.

This Christmas, if you are lucky enough to be holidaying in Meribel, I would definitely recommend getting up for the first lift to beat the sun and the crowds and take the lifts to the top of the mountain. You can ski down into Mottaret however it is slightly patchy in places although on the other side of the valley, if you go up Platieres there is more snow and you can safely ski back down.

The runs at the top of Tougnette are also in good condition. Despite the lack of snow this year so far, Meribel has done an excellent job in keeping its pistes in good condition and more and more pistes are opening up every day so you have nothing to worry about if you are coming out skiing soon! Val Thorens, Courchevel and Les Menuires are now also open and I would recommend buying a three valley pass if you are here for a week and plan to do a lot of skiing.
