Welcome to Winter 2026/27!

The countdown to another ski season in Méribel is almost over! The resort is preparing to welcome skiers and snowboarders back to the mountains, with the lifts scheduled to open on Saturday 5 December. The wider 3 Vallées ski area is also set to open on the same day, allowing visitors to explore the slopes beyond the Méribel valley as winter gets underway.

There are plenty of improvements to look forward to this season, from upgraded ski lifts and piste improvements to a refreshed snowpark in Méribel-Mottaret. The resort is also preparing a busy December calendar, with opening weekend celebrations, festive entertainment and ski racing planned in the weeks ahead.

Whether you're a regular visitor or planning your first trip to the 3 Vallées, we'll be bringing you weekly updates on snowfall, piste conditions, weather forecasts and everything happening around the resort. From the first turns of December to the final spring skiing days in April, we'll be keeping you informed about what to expect on the mountain.

Snow and Weather Summary

The beginning of December is always an exciting time in the Alps, with everyone keeping a close eye on snowfall and temperatures ahead of opening weekend. Méribel's central position in the 3 Vallées offers access to a wide variety of terrain, although the amount of skiing available initially will depend on snow cover, temperatures and the work of the piste preparation teams.

Early-season conditions can vary considerably between elevations. The higher slopes around Saulire and Mont Vallon generally offer a better chance of retaining colder snow, while lower runs towards Méribel Centre and the surrounding villages may need additional snowfall or snowmaking before they can open. The slopes around Méribel-Mottaret also provide access to higher-altitude terrain, making them worth watching as the season approaches.

Méribel and its connections to the wider 3 Vallées are scheduled to open on 5 December, although the full extent of the available terrain will depend on conditions. Val Thorens and Orelle are scheduled to begin their seasons earlier, on 21 November, with Courchevel following on 4 December.

Even once the lifts begin operating, it's worth checking which pistes and valley connections are open rather than assuming the entire ski area is available from day one.

We'll be following the latest snow depths, fresh snowfall and weather forecasts throughout December, with regular updates as the season gets underway.

What's New in Méribel This Winter?

There are several improvements to look forward to across Méribel this winter, including the final stage of a major gondola refurbishment, better snowmaking facilities and changes to the popular snowpark.

One of the biggest developments is the completion of the Rhodos gondola renovation. Following earlier upgrades to the cabins, technical equipment and lower stations, the final phase focuses on the upper station, with improvements to the platforms, façades and passenger facilities. New toilets and a dedicated ski school area are also part of the project, making the lift more comfortable and practical for visitors.

Over in Méribel-Mottaret, the Châtelet chairlift is set to return to service for winter 2026/27. This will be particularly welcome news for freestyle enthusiasts, providing direct access from the bottom of the snowpark to the upper section without needing to return to the resort's main snow front. The snowpark itself is also receiving a new visual identity, with redesigned signage and clearer layouts to help riders navigate the different areas.

The Plattières gondola is getting a more colourful makeover this winter, with selected cabins featuring original artwork by French artist Lucas Beaufort. Inspired by mountain and board sports culture, the designs will add a creative touch to the journey up the mountain.

There are also improvements to the pistes. In the Pas du Lac sector, the Niverolle red run has been reprofiled and equipped with snowmaking to improve the skiing experience. The Truite piste, which links Méribel-Mottaret with Méribel Centre, is also benefiting from upgraded snowmaking infrastructure.

Finally, the Les 3 Vallées app is introducing an itinerary-planning feature designed to help skiers navigate the slopes using their ability level and live lift and piste information.

Outlook & What's On

The first few weeks of December will be all about getting the ski season underway. Méribel is scheduled to open on 5 December, with more terrain becoming available as snow conditions permit. The weather over the coming weeks will play an important part in how quickly the ski area can expand, particularly on lower slopes and the connections between villages.

Opening day promises a lively atmosphere across the resort. On Saturday 5 December, visitors can enjoy traditional Savoyard music and local specialities near the Bouquetin chairlift from 11:30. There will also be mountain food tastings near Saulire and entertainment on the Méribel-Mottaret snow front to celebrate the return of winter.

Away from the pistes, December has plenty to offer. On 22 December, former figure skating champion Philippe Candeloro and Olivia Candeloro bring their ice show La Fille du Marchand de Sable to Méribel. The 75-minute performance combines skating, dance and storytelling in a festive production designed for families.

The resort will also welcome competitive skiing at the end of the month, with two FIS slalom races scheduled for 28 and 29 December at the Corbey stadium. The women's and men's competitions will take place under floodlights, giving spectators an opportunity to watch international-level racing in the evening.

Christmas celebrations will bring further entertainment to the villages, including live music, festive parades and family activities. Méribel-Mottaret is also preparing to welcome the New Year with a celebration on the snow front on 31 December..

Getting Ready for the Ski Season

If you're heading to Méribel in the coming weeks, now is a good time to get the final details of your trip organised. Whether it's arranging airport transfers, booking ski hire and lessons, or reserving a table at your favourite mountain restaurant, a little preparation can make those first days on the slopes much easier.

If you're staying in Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret or one of the surrounding villages, it's also worth checking the local lift connections and transport arrangements before arriving. Early in the season, the availability of lower pistes and village links can vary depending on snow conditions.

Keep an eye on the latest lift and piste updates, particularly if you're planning to explore the wider 3 Vallées during opening weekend.

Snow Takeaway

The wait is nearly over, and Méribel is getting ready for another winter in the 3 Vallées. With the slopes scheduled to open on 5 December, the return of the Châtelet chairlift, improvements to the Rhodos gondola and refreshed facilities around the ski area, there's plenty to look forward to this season.

As always at this time of year, the best early-season skiing is likely to be found at higher elevations, with further terrain opening as conditions allow. We'll be back with our regular weekly reports to follow the snow and help you make the most of the winter ahead.
