Snow Report 6th April 2023

Imprint
By Caro Blackwell, Updated

We’ve been getting such a mix of weather again this last week. After the decent snowfall on Friday and Saturday, we’ve had a few sunny days this week with temperatures remaining cold, for the most part sub zero.  Great that it stayed cooler with lower freezing levels to maintain and keep the snow we have in good condition on the pistes. Up at higher altitude on north facing slopes the snow has felt quite wintery for most of the day. On the lower slopes now it is very patchy and the connecting runs are not in great condition by the end of the day.  In the main, normal spring skiing conditions prevail, a little icy and firm in the mornings, softening up through the day and a bit slushy after lunch. Take advantage of the sunshine and enjoy a later long lunch on a sunny terrace!

Good skiing for the Easter long weekend in Meribel. Looks like temperatures will remain cold for the time of year for the next few days with a freezing level of around 1700 - 2000m and a light snowfall is forecast on Friday evening. Remaining cooler at altitude we can expect some fine sunshine on Saturday and Sunday. Looking a little unsettled after that with the chance of snow on Tuesday but the freezing level will be rising to around 2500m, although a bit early to predict accurately.
No significant wind forecast and the avalanche risk is currently rated at moderate at 2 out of 5.

Top tips for skiing this week

  • The temperature is changeable in the mountains, we’re technically spring skiing but it’s chilly out of the sun. So thinner layers, a shell jacket rather than a thick winter coat, more lightweight gloves are a good idea, and open those vents as the day warms up! You may need a waterproof jacket on Tuesday though.
  • Don't forget the sunscreen! Even when the windchill is high, the sun in the mountains is still intense.
  • You’ll need your goggle lenses for sun and flat light this week
  • Early morning the pistes are harder packed and maybe a bit icy and then a bit slushy in the afternoon. So coordinate your ski time to whichever conditions you prefer.
  • Get your skis and boards waxed as the wetter snow can slow you down a bit!
  • Book the sunny restaurant terrace for lunch
