New Neighbourhood is Given the Go-Ahead in Meribel Centre
Green light officially given for a new development at les Ravines in Meribel
A ten year case study has resulted in a new development project proposing high-end residences, shops, services and parking in Meribel Centre, at the site of the current Ravines outdoor car park.
The project comes as a result of risk assessments that have been carried out on the Doron des Allues, a deceptively tranquil stream that runs through the village. But, as the saying goes, still waters run deep... snowmelt combined with torrential rains have the potential to transform the quiet stream into a raging torrent capable of flooding nearby urban areas.
The local town hall has been cogitating on this for some time and various risk assessments have been carried out over the past ten years, taking economic development and tourist attraction into account.
As well as featuring drainage channels and flood-prevention features the new district will include a high-end tourist residence, shops, services, underground parking on several floors and an overhead pedestrian link to the heart of the resort. The neighbourhood will be built to complement the landscape and economy of the Meribel valley.
The project is the culmination of ten years of study and work that has cost more than 3.7 million euros excluding tax, which has been supported by state subsidies, the European Union and the county council. Building work is due to start within the next few months.
