Meribel Apres Ski Report: 8th January 2009

By Laura Donaldson, Updated

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to the Meribel Apres Ski report. My name is Laura and I’ll be bringing you a weekly round up of what’s going on in and around the resort once the sun has gone down and the lifts have closed. I’ll be letting you know where the liveliest parties are, the best bands are playing and also keeping you posted on some of the many events and activities that happen throughout the season in Meribel.

So starting with last weeks big celebration……..we had lots of fireworks and fun at New Year, with the Rond Point kicking off proceedings with a DJ on the terrace and a band playing inside. It stayed open until the wee, small hours instead of closing at its usual 7.30pm. Evolution and Jack’s Bar joined forces (both are located near La Chaudanne) to provide entertainment from Honey Fungus, Mikey Gray and DJ, Rob Solari, and La Taverne was also at the centre of all the mayhem as usual, never failing to provide a high caliber of food service.

We spent some time with friends in Le Raffort and after much eating of food and drinking of wine and champagne, kissing and frolicking in the snow (mostly looking for a bottle of champagne which had last been seen sitting somewhere in the snow, keeping cool!) Some attractive fireworks captured our attention and we adjourned proceedings and headed in the direction of La Tsaretta in Les Allues. I stayed there until it looked as though things might be descending into madness before heading off home.

Earlier in the week, I was passing the Méribel ice rink when I noticed an inordinate number of young guys with large bags piling off large buses. As I looked closer it seemed as though everything was large, the bags especially. They all looked very professional and unfazed carrying their bulky loads, this had to be a serious hockey match. It was. Two of the best ice hockey teams in the French League were playing in the regional championships. Meribel hosts regular ice hockey matches at the Patinoire (ice rink) near La Chaudanne and it's always an action packed night out for all the family.

If you're looking for some après this coming week, the first stop for you is the Rond Point at the side of the piste on the way down to Méribel. The bar is located just below the first station of the Rhodos bubble and they have a different band playing every night. Otherwise, if you're up for a laugh, Mikey Gray can always supply some fun and banter at the liveliest après in town. He can be found singing his heart out in Jack's Bar every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and he'll play anything from Britney Spears to AC/DC!

Have a great week!
