It’s that time of year again when French ski resorts tot up the books and reveal just how much profit they did or didn’t make last winter.

Stepping up to the podium for gold, silver and bronze are Chamonix Mont Blanc, La Plagne and Val Thorens respectively.

Despite experiencing a decline in sales of 0.70% since last year the Compagnie du Mont Blanc, who manages the Chamonix and Les Houches ski areas, still made somewhere in the region of 74 million euros and cornered 5.68% of the French market.

La Plagne wasn’t far behind with a 1.15% increase on last year bringing them up to 70.3M€, whereas Val Thorens was the surprise bronze medallist with a whopping 11% increase on last year and a total of 67.6M€.

Coming in at fourth and fifth place were ADS (Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry) and S3V (Courchevel, la Tania, Méribel-Mottaret).

Considering that numbers of tourists visiting ski resorts was down by 2.7% last year, the fact that most ski resorts saw an increase in sales is even more surprising. Could people be spending more… or are ski resorts just increasing their margins?
