Leaves are changing colour and Meribel is starting to feel ready for winter
Preparations for winter continue throughout the rest of the year in Méribel and as autumn advances, the rate of work accelerates. Piste re-shaping, lift installation, chalet construction, shop refitting: the activity and noise grows more intense as deadlines loom. The countdown is already on as the season starts in Méribel on December 3rd this year when the resort and ski area will be partially open.
What's new in the ski area this winter? You'll find the top section of the Saulire gondola gone, replaced by the new Saulire Express lift; there's a new Funitel serving two extra pistes in Val Thorens; a replacement chairlift in Courchevel and a host of minor piste improvements and more snow cannons. Méribel is currently looking to its future. Preparations are already underway for 2015, when the resort hosts the prestigious Finals of the Alpine Skiing World Cup. This will be the first time a French resort has organised the whole event and it will be the most important event for Méribel since the Olympic Games in 1992. See full details here
Méribel has also recently published its White Paper, a development plan for the next five years. The goal is to enter the Top 5 European resorts for European skiers and the top 10 summer mountain destinations for the French. The new marketing strategy has already been unveiled, based around the "I ♥ Méribel" logo. Expect to see it everywhere this winter...
Sadly, this year I will be away from Méribel in the run-up to the winter season. This report will be updated at the end of November and start of December by a couple of guest reporters and I'll be back in time for Christmas with more news of the snow and general goings-on from our favourite resort.
