A rockfall on the main access road to Les Menuires and Val Thorens has caused long delays for tourists leaving and arriving at Tarentaise resorts this Saturday.

A 50 tonne rock fell onto the RD117 between Moutiers and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville around 4pm on Friday, leaving the only access to the resort via the narrow RD96 through St Laurent de la Cote. Traffic on this diversion is limited to light vehicles only (buses and lorries are banned) and in one direction only – downhill until 5pm and uphill after 6pm today. Traffic in Moutiers has been stationary for much of today and alternative accommodation is being offered to stranded tourists in Moûtiers and Albertville.

Access to Méribel and Courchevel has been made difficult by traffic parked along the main roads. Traffic lights on the N90 dual carriageway at Aigueblanche have been in operation, leading to a 20km tailback to the St Hélène tolls. The RD117 is expected to reopen this evening but the tailbacks are not expected to clear for some hours.

Road users are advised to listen to Autoroute radio 107.7 and France Bleu 103.9 or consult savoie-route.fr for the latest information
